This is a dream come true. I first fell in love with this car in 1977 after the movie Smokey & The Bandit. I was only 13 years old at the time. I was able to make my dream come true in 1998. I wanted to find the right car and after shopping around and driving ten different models from 1977-1981 I lucked out and found a 1978 Trans Am. It was not a Special Edition like the movie car, but it was a Limited Edition which I had not seen very many of. What sold me on this car was that the current owner was only the second owner. He had bought it several years earlier and was slowly rebuilding it. The car was driven daily and was not of show quality when I first purchased it from this gentleman. All the work had pretty much been done. He had removed the Pontiac 400 engine and sent it out to be rebuilt. Once done, it is now a balanced a blue-printed 455, with a wolverine blue racer camshaft, high volume-output oil pump, a new Holley 750 double pumper, 4 core radiator, new everything-alternater, heater core, fuel pump, etc. etc. Even the reserve bottles for the radiator and windshield washer were new. I added Headman headers, Flowmasters, recalibrated the speedometer, put in a new A/C system. It has a turbo 400 transmission with a shift kit and a 1800-2100 stall converter with a trans cooler. All this feeds into a rebuilt 12 bolt rear end with Richmon 411 gears, new axles, and a new drive shaft. All the seals have been replaced along with the power windows. The interior is original: black velour which is still in great shape. The dash and steering wheel are new, the panel that goes around the gauges was stripped and replaced with polished aluminum. A B&M competition shifter was installed. The springs, front and back, along with the shocks were replaced. Instead of the usual snowflake wheels, I went with centerlines with 60's on the front and 10 inch wide 50's on the rear. With a total of 475 horsepower, it still smokes the tires. I took the car to the paint shop in October 1998. It took them six months to bring the body back to life. The car had never been wrecked, had very little rust: some in the rear end behind the rear bumper, so I cut it out and replaced those pieces. The entire car was stripped to the metal, prepped and primed four times and then painted with 3 coats of base and 4 of clear. I went with the German style lettering on the decals instead of the stock block letters. I thought it looked nicer. New birds from Year One, and here is the final outcome!! My dream come true! Thanks for letting me share it with you, feel free to email me..........Jerry.
